What is The Murmur?

The Murmur is an iOS app that lets you search for any public Instagram profile and leave anonymous comments on it. No Instagram account is required. Your real identity is never revealed β€” not even to us.

Do I need to create an account?

No. The Murmur creates an anonymous identity for you automatically when you first open the app. No email, no password, no sign-up form. Your device becomes your key.

How does the anonymous identity work?

When you open the app, your device sends an identifier to our servers. We immediately hash it with SHA-256 (a one-way cryptographic function) β€” so we store only the hash, never the original ID. From this hash we derive a unique anonymous display name like SilentEagle3840. This name is shown on your comments, but it cannot be traced back to you or your device.

Are my comments really anonymous?

Yes. Your comments are linked only to your anonymous username β€” a name derived from a one-way hash. We do not store your real name, email, phone number, or the original device ID. Even our own team cannot identify who wrote a comment.

Can I change my anonymous username?

No. Your anonymous username is deterministically generated from your device hash. It is fixed and cannot be changed. This is by design β€” it ensures consistency without revealing your identity.

What happens if I delete and reinstall the app?

If your device ID remains the same after reinstalling, you will get the same anonymous identity back automatically. However, if you reset your device or use a different device, a new anonymous identity will be created β€” your previous identity cannot be recovered.

Can I delete a comment I posted?

Yes. Tap the comment you posted in the app and select Delete. The content is removed immediately and permanently purged within 90 days.

What is the Weekly Leaderboard?

Every week, the most-liked anonymous comments across all Instagram profiles are ranked. The top comments are displayed on the Leaderboard tab. Rankings reset each week.

Which Instagram profiles can I comment on?

Any public Instagram profile. Private accounts are not accessible. The app fetches publicly available profile information β€” no Instagram login is required.

Is The Murmur affiliated with Instagram or Meta?

No. The Murmur is an independent app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Meta Platforms, Inc. or Instagram. Comments posted in The Murmur are not visible on Instagram.

Which languages does the app support?

The app is available in English, Turkish (TΓΌrkΓ§e), Spanish (EspaΓ±ol), and Arabic (Ψ§Ω„ΨΉΨ±Ψ¨ΩŠΨ©). The language is selected automatically based on your device settings.

Is the app free?

Yes. The Murmur is completely free to download and use. There are no in-app purchases.

The app is not loading / I see an error. What should I do?

Try the following steps:

  • Check your internet connection
  • Force-close the app and reopen it
  • Update the app to the latest version from the App Store
  • Restart your iPhone

If the problem persists, contact us with a description of the issue and your iOS version.

Account & Privacy

What data do you store about me?

We store only:

  • A SHA-256 hash of your device ID (not the device ID itself)
  • Your anonymous username
  • Comments and likes you create, linked to your anonymous username

We never store your name, email, phone number, location, or the original device ID. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

How do I request deletion of my data?

To delete all data associated with your account:

  1. 1 Email us at privacy@themurmurapp.com
  2. 2 Include your anonymous username (visible in the app's profile section)
  3. 3 We will delete all associated records β€” comments, likes, and your hashed device record β€” within 30 days

How do I delete a specific comment?

Open the app, navigate to the comment you posted, long-press or tap the options menu, and select Delete. Your comment will be removed immediately.

Can other users find out who I am?

No. Your anonymous username cannot be linked to your real identity by other users or by us. The only information visible to others is your anonymous username and the content of your comments.

Your privacy is built into the architecture. The SHA-256 hash used to derive your identity is a one-way transformation β€” it is mathematically impossible to reverse it to find your original device ID.

If you see a comment that violates our Terms of Use (harassment, threats, hate speech, etc.), you can report it directly within the app:

  2. 2 Tap Report
  3. 3 Our team will review the report
